What is DLDP

The community based ‘Dairy and Livestock Development Program (DLDP)’ has been formed by the Development Initiative for Social Advancement (DISA) to ensure implementation of the designed activities required in the process to strengthen the cattle development efforts in Bangladesh. Reviewing the enormous potentiality of Livestock sector in national economy, the endeavor is for greater national interest. In the way, DLDP has planned a number of development activities involving male and female groups for their economic & social benefits. These include: Establishment of Dairy Plant, formation of DLDP Dairy Campus - integrating activities of Demonstrative Cattle Farm, Model Farm, Cattle treatment/healthcare facilities & Farmers’ school/ institution, Cattle Treatment and Breed Development Programs, Milk collection infra-structures & marketing channel development, and related others.

The project area includes initially Comilla district of Bangladesh particularly the valleys of the Lalmai hills and reverie & marshy lands covered by partly Comilla Sadar, Chandina, Barura, Kachua, Matlab and Laksam Upazilas those were earlier popular for milk production. The area of operation is being expanded further. Now it is also covering Munshiganj District.

Considering existing dairy and livestock status of Bangladesh, DISA initiated the current program for the benefit of poor, marginal & less fortunate farmers thereby contribute effectively in the national economy with the experience DISA gathered by 23 years of rural financing and other development activities. Accordingly, the program is planning related activities, in the tunes of its vision and mission.

Vision

To supplement the huge national demand of milk, the project aims at undertaking activities of livestock development based on DISA’s own experience with the involvement of milk producing farmers’.

  • Contribute effectively in the process of country’s milk production increase for greater national benefit;
  • Preference to the best possible quality of milk production with increased quantity:
  • Prioritizing farmers’ involvement in the social chain for consumers’ satisfaction along with health & nutrition needs; and;
  • Increase in the income of the low-income group families through increased quantity of milk sale; and other diversified opportunities and
  • Involvement of the women community in the rural income generation proces.

Mission

Through integrated approach with rural production of milk the project will contribute to meet local market demand of milk both for direct consumers and industrial consumption

  • Offering quality milk with appropriate nutrition value;
  • Establishing economic tie between urban and rural population;
  • Participate in offering change in the life-style of the people; and
  • Contribute to national economy significantly.

Program Objective

The present project has the major objectives of:

  • Integration of the farmers in the improved cattle keeping and milk producing activities providing fair price and guaranteed market for their produce thereby assist them in income increase and to remain free from the exploitation of the middle-men milk traders;
  • To create job opportunities through operation of the project as well as advancement of country’s industrial & agricultural development endeavor to contribute in the poverty alleviation process of the country;
  • Involve women community in the income generating activities through improved cattle rearing practices;
  • Supplement in the process of nutritive milk & milk products in the dietary of the people of all ages specially the young generation striving for knowledge to become a meritorious nation;
  • Help gradual decrease of dependency on import of milk and milk products thereby saving country’s hard earned foreign currency;
  • Contribute significantly in the national economy through local and global products’ milk & milk food business chain
